Google today released a comprehensive ajax powered calendar application in an effort to compete with similar services currently offered by competitors such as Yahoo, Zimbra, 30 Boxes, Microsoft etc.
This application integrates tightly with other Google services such as Google search, Google maps and Gmail and offers users to import public calendars. Google Calendar, the free Web-based event planner can be reached at calendar.google.com
Google's goal was to make the service "drop-dead simple," said Carl Sjogreen, product manager for Google Calendar. "We heard from our users about their frustration with the current tools," explained.
Some of the features of Google Calendar are:
XML/ICAL feeds for public and private calendars
Event Publisher
Event notifications via cell phone or email
AJAX Powered Drag and Drop of events
Manage Multiple Calendars
Sharing your calendar
Invite people to events
Integration with GMail
Another interesting feature of Google Calendar is the "Event Publisher". If any web site that talks about events, shows, bookings, meetings etc then an entry can be automatically added to the Google Calendar from an icon on the website. This is done through a specially formatted URL and an icon that looks like this:
It also have an equal sign (=) in the bottom of events box which could be used to expand the time span of event.
Each individual calendar you create is listed in your list of calendars, and is color-coded so its events are clearly distinguished from events in other calendars. To see events in a specific calendar, simply tick the check box next to its name. You can view events from as many different calendars as you like. Being able to manage multiple calendars within this relatively simple, straightforward interface is one of the most powerful features of the program.
