As promised Today Michael Robertson has released another Ajax powered application after ajaxWrite.
ajaxSketch is an object-oriented drawing program suitable for creating flow charts, org charts, simple diagrams, maps, etc. ajaxSketch can open, edit and save files in SVG, an open standard graphic format, making it compatible with Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Visio, Open Office Draw, Corel Draw, Inkscape, and many others, all of which support SVG.
He writes while launching ajaxSketch "Last week I announced ajaxWrite, a novel Internet-loaded application that looks and operates like a traditional desktop application and allows you to open and edit files Microsoft Word documents. Little did I know it would trigger a massive wave of users drowning our servers making them sluggish or non-responsive. What was billed as a 6-second loading time became a minute or longer the first day and half until we could quadruple our initial capacity.
During the launch, we also tracked down some bugs primarily with Save As feature. The good news is we fixed them and subsequent users received the benefit immediately since the software is download as it is used, which illustrates the benefit of ajax-delivered programs. "
He further writes on success of ajaxWrite that "Over the last 6 days, more than 500,000 documents have been created with ajaxWrite, including a report on William Shakespeare written by my son for a grade school assignment. I'm confident that the launch of ajaxWrite was the biggest in history for a new word processor."
AjaxSketch is basically a pared down version of Illustrator or Inkscape — perfect for creating quick charts and diagrams from scratch. It includes autoshapes, pencil mode, and text for creating the basics. You can also edit by resizing, rotating, changing background or pen color, and altering opacity. Like ajaxWrite, ajaxSketch also works only with Firefox browser.
AjaxSketch uses the popular SVG format natively; SVG is an illustration format that's both powerful and open — complex gradients, compound shapes, and dynamic content are all managed easily in ajaxSketch/SVG. What's more, since SVG is an open standard, any files made with ajaxSketch can be brought directly into Microsoft Visio, Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Macromedia Freehand, and other illustration programs. As a "vector" graphic format, SVG can be altered, resized, and reshaped endlessly without destroying quality, or giving you that "pixelated" look.
Similar to ajaxWrite, ajaxSketch doesn't require a download or installation process thanks to ajax technology. A single click will load a drawing program with custom menus, tools and dialog boxes. It's not even required to register.
