Microsoft, Eclipse Square Off Over Ajax

Microsoft has long dominated application development on the Windows environment with its Visual Studio tool suite. But as computing moves off the desktop and onto the Web, the Eclipse Foundation is looking to seriously undermine Microsoft's leadership in user-interface development.
The latest move to topple Microsoft from its lofty perch in the world of development tools is the release of the Ajax Toolkit Framework, which would run inside Eclipse's namesake open source programmer's workbench. The framework makes it easier to use Ajax tools inside of Eclipse.
Ajax is becoming a key methodology for building user interfaces for Web applications by combining JavaScript and extensible markup language. Rather than sending a request back to a server each time to retrieve new data, Ajax makes it possible to store the information in a browser's cache to grab it quicker. Another big advantage of building an Ajax-based UI is that it will run on Windows, Linux or Mac computers.
