Ajax-based RIAs are fast becoming the benchmark for Web application front ends because they provide the best of both worlds: rich and reach. Ajax applications are as rich as desktop applications and highly responsive, and provide all data on a single page without page refreshes. They also have the reach of standards-based browser applications that can be deployed easily without any browser plug-ins or client-side applets.
Backbase provides Ajax software that is standards-based, comprehensive, and easy-to-use. The Backbase Presentation Client (BPC) is based on Ajax technology, extending DHTML with additional tags called Backbase XML (BXML). The Backbase XML Server Edition for J2EE (BXS) contains the server-side components required by J2EE developers to quickly develop Ajax front ends for J2EE applications.
In this article, I utilize Backbase to develop an Ajax-based front end for the Java Pet Store. This case study explains how to use Backbase technology as the Ajax presentation tier for J2EE applications. You can view an online demonstration of the application described in this article at: http://www.backbase.com/xmlserver.
